Early Saturday morning, long before the sun had fully risen over the Maldivian horizon, over 150 dedicated members and volunteers of the Maldives Scout and Guide Fellowship (MSGF) gathered at Hulhumalé Phase 2. Armed with biodegradable trash bags, protective gloves, and an unwavering commitment to our scouting values, the team embarked on our largest annual coastal cleanup to date.

The Maldives, renowned globally for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, faces an ongoing battle against ocean plastics and marine debris. As former Scouts and Guides, our fundamental duty to protect nature and serve the community remains as vital today as it was in our youth. This weekend's initiative was a testament to that enduring promise.

"Seeing multiple generations of Scouts and Guides working side-by-side to protect our shores is incredibly moving. Fellowship isn't just about remembering the past; it's about actively securing the future of our islands."

A Collaborative Effort

Working in synchronized teams, participants meticulously combed through a 2-kilometer stretch of the eastern coastline. The focus was not only on large visible debris but also on hazardous microplastics hidden within the sand, which pose a severe threat to local marine life, including nesting sea turtles and seabirds.

By noon, the collective effort yielded extraordinary results. The team successfully collected and sorted over 500 kilograms of waste. Plastics, glass, and general refuse were carefully segregated on-site. We are proud to have partnered with the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), who provided logistical support to ensure that all recyclable materials were transported safely to the appropriate processing facilities.

Looking Ahead

The success of the Hulhumalé cleanup sets a powerful precedent for the rest of the year. The MSGF Executive Committee extends its deepest gratitude to every volunteer who sacrificed their weekend morning to make a tangible difference. Moving forward, we aim to expand these initiatives to neighboring atolls, providing resources and support to active youth Scout and Guide troops to lead cleanups in their own communities.

If you missed this event but wish to participate in future community service projects, please keep an eye on our Events page or contact the executive committee to get involved.
